Choosing a Domain Name – What are the Rules
What are the characteristics of a good domain name? Many people are confused with this question because there are such varying opinions. We see domain names with only a few generic letters becoming well known trademarks. These domain names are often just 3 letters and can be sold for millions of dollars.
On the other hand, we are told to pick domain names that identify exactly what the website is all about. Sometimes these domain names are long and difficult to remember. However, they are “keyword rich”.
So, how should we pick our domain names? Let’s look at pointers on this.
First of all, the maximum domain length that any webhost will accept is 63 characters, which is pretty long. Most domain name experts firmly agree that a domain name should be shorter than this, keeping it as short as possible. The reason for this is so that it is easier to remember and type.
You should also know that domain names with special characters such as hyphens and underbars are harder to describe to the customers over the phone. It is perhaps for the reason that most of the visitors are not used to them either and there are instances that you may accidentally send customers to your competitors if they have the same names without special characters.
Another consideration is that your domain name should be the same as your company name or a description of your product rather than your company initials. For example, you would instantly know more about site named “NeverPayIncomeTaxAgain”, rather than “NPITA”.
The truth is, it doesn’t matter what domain name you choose. The success of your business will be based on many factors; with a major one being how well the public knows who you are and where to find you.
